Practice Experience
Phil practices in the area of employment and employee benefits law. He was a member of the employment
and employee benefits law department with Armstrong Teasdale LLP for 21 years, becoming a
partner in 1987. He moved his practice to Dysart Taylor in March 2002.
Phil currently serves as general counsel of the Kansas City, Missouri Employees’ Retirement System
(KCERS), a position he has held since 1994. Mr. Klawuhn is also general counsel for the § 457 deferred
compensation plan for the City.
In the employment area, Phil has represented many clients in litigation including defense of wrongful
discharge and equal employment opportunity claims, ERISA, ADA, ADEA, FMLA, Soldiers and Sailors
Relief Act, USERRA, wage and hour, FLSA, unemployment compensation, workers’ compensation, sexual
harassment and employee civil rights claims. He has prosecuted and defended cases concerning
covenants not to compete, proprietary information and similar occupational restriction cases. He has
defended employers in employee defamation and malicious prosecution cases, and has also practiced
extensively in the areas of complex litigation, commercial disputes litigation and personal injury.
Phil is admitted to practice before the Missouri Supreme Court, the Eighth
and Tenth Circuit Courts of Appeals, and
the United States District Court for the
Western District of Missouri and the District
of Kansas. In the past, he served as a Special
Assistant Attorney General of Missouri from
1990-1995.
