Last month, Dysart Taylor had the privilege of hosting four students from the Kansas City Metropolitan Bar Foundation (KCMBF) Student Law Academy. The two-part program provides rising juniors and seniors in high school with meaningful exposure to careers in the legal profession as well as with a broad overview of the legal system.
The first component of the Academy, the Legal Pathway, provides the SLA scholars with in-person educational sessions to learn from legal professionals on a variety of topics. This component of the program strives to give the scholars exposure to careers in the legal field and an overview of the legal system. Each scholar is assigned a mentor to share ideas and meet with for lunch once a week.
Following graduation from the Legal Pathway, SLA graduates then have the opportunity to participate in an in-person, rotational internship opportunity and mock trial experience. The scholars are placed at different law firms, courts and government agencies to job shadow legal professionals at different offices each week. With their mentor, they are prepared for job shadow opportunities and building their portfolios for future career opportunities.
βIt continues to be such an exciting and rewarding experience to host the students for the job shadow portion of the academy,β Dysart Taylor shareholder/director Meghan Litecky said. βI am grateful to have had the chance to provide these students with experience in the legal profession and hopefully inspire them to continue on this path and future career.β
