Why did you want to become an attorney? What made you decide on this field?
I didn’t plan to be an attorney until after I graduated from KU. I was a legal assistant at a California immigration firm when 9/11 happened. There were two particular attorneys at that firm who shaped me who I am today. I watched how these female attorneys would be presented with nearly impossible legal issues in immigration, but they always managed to find solutions for the clients. That’s when I realized that people seek out attorneys when they have a problem, and I like solving problems. After working for that law firm, it seemed like the natural step to go to law school.”

What is the best thing about being an attorney?
“It is cheesy, but one of the best parts of being an attorney is helping people with their problems.  It feels good when you have a stressed out/reluctant client walking into your office seeking help, and at the end of their case, the client is walking out of your office relieved that their matter has been resolved. That feeling is what keeps me going.”

What is your biggest goal for your legal career?
“I hope someday I can be in a place in my career where I can influence other female minorities to join the legal industry.  Attorneys represent different walks of life so it makes sense to me that people should have access to attorneys who understand them and their culture – whether it’s because they share and speak another language, or if the client and attorney belong to a certain gender group.”

How do you like to spend your time outside of work?
“I like to go to the dog parks with our rescue bloodhound, Lucy, and I enjoy golfing. My family also really enjoys going to the local farmers market in the KC area. My two kids are both in sports, so they keep us busy.”

What Kansas City experience would you recommend to everyone?
“I think Kansas City is a phenomenal sports city. We have Royals baseball, Chiefs football, Sporting KC soccer, and KU basketball. Other than Sporting KC, since they are still a new KC sports team, all venues are rich with tradition. If people visit KC, I usually urge them to go to a sports event so KC can show them how we do things around here!  I also think since we’re in the Midwest, particularly in Kansas City, everyone should go and have a good steak. BBQ is definitely great here, but go get a real steak.”
