In October, Dysart Taylor shareholder/director Carol Smith spoke at the American Bar Association’s (ABA) Fidelity Law Fall Conference in Chicago. The conference was held in conjunction with the release of the organization’s recent publication, The Modern Fidelity Claim Deskbook: Understanding the Impact of Technology, in which Smith contributed.

Over the two-day conference, attendees had the opportunity to attend sessions held by industry-leading fidelity bond/crime policy and technology experts who examined the impact of emerging technology on current claims. Presentations evaluated the intersection between electronic crime schemes and insuring agreement coverages; educated on basic technological and computer components, concepts, and principles; and highlighted underwriting and claims handling advancements in light of the increasingly digital world.

On the first day of the conference, alongside co-presenter Nick Espinosa of Security Fanatics, Smith held the presentation, Computer Fraud – The Encyclopedic History of an Old Coverage Now Made Relevant, highlighting some of the key insights from her chapter in the ABA publication.

The panel provided insight into how to define and delineate what constitutes computer fraud as opposed to fraud perpetuated with or involving the use of a computer in light of advancement of social engineering schemes. Smith and Espinosa answered questions pertaining to what computer fraud looks like within policy definitions, how bad actors attack and gain entry into computer systems, and how to prevent or discourage hacking.
